Τα Κανάρια Νησιά οφείλουν την ονομασία τους όχι στα πτηνά όπως πολλοί νομίζουν αλλά στα σκυλιά!
Στα Ρωμαϊκά χρόνια τα νησιά ήταν γνωστά για τα άγρια σκυλιά που περιπλανιόταν εκεί. Και έτσι, καθώς η λατινική λέξη για το «σκυλί» είναι «canis», ονομάστηκαν Κανάρια Νησιά.
